Meeting as students at Louisiana State University, bassoonist Javier Rodriguez and saxophonist Sean Fredenburg were inspired by their teachers to blend these two instruments, a rarely seen, yet harmonious combination. To remedy the lack of existing works for such a duo, they began arranging existing pieces and commissioning their composer friends and colleagues to write original works for the newly formed Post-Haste Reed Duo.
Since coming together in 2009, Post-Haste has toured colleges and universities throughout the United States, performing and presenting master classes in woodwind performance, chamber music, and entrepreneurship. Additionally, they have appeared at national meetings of College Music Society, North American Saxophone Alliance, and the Society for Electro Acoustic Music in the United States. Post-Haste has been featured artists at the Jubilus Festival in Gainesville, FL, White Lake Chamber Music Festival in White Lake, MI, Friends of Rain New Music Ensemble of Portland, OR, Future Music Oregon in Eugene, OR, and has served as Ensemble-In-Residence for Classical Revolution PDX’s inaugural Outreach Series Program.
The Post-Haste Reed Duo mission is two-fold: to increase the amount of quality chamber music literature for saxophone and bassoon duo and to encourage young musicians to experiment performing in non-traditional chamber ensembles. As a bridge between composers with audiences, PHRD hopes their efforts to expand the bassoon/saxophone ensemble’s repertoire will inspire and challenge musicians and listeners alike, to create and connect with new music.
